Food!

Yunnan Cuisine has a huge varieties of food and many dishes are quite spicy. Mushrooms are feature prominently. The wide use of flowers as food is another characteristic of Yunnan. 
Two of the province's most famous products are the renowned pu-erh tea(普洱茶) which is traditionally grown in Simao; as well as Xuanwei ham (宣威腿), which is often used to flavour stewed and braised foods in Chinese cuisine, as well as for making the stocks and broths of many Chinese soups.

There are also many snack booths set up along the roads in Yunnan and many people will stop at these little booths for a snack, or dinner. The food in the booths is cheap, and wonderfully delicious, and diners get to watch their food being prepared.

Pu-Erh Tea:
  • a type of tea made from a "large leaf" variety of the tea plant Camellia sinensis and named after Pu'er county near SimaoYunnanChina
  • can be roughly classified on the tea oxidation scale as a green tea.

Famous dishes include 过桥米线 ('Crossing the bridge' or 'Across the bridge' noodles)
  • rice noodle soup from Yunnan province, China
  • main ingredient of the noodles is rice. 
  • general ingredients of Guo qiao mi xian are made from includes: raw quail eggs, ham slices, chicken slices, coloured vegetables
  • two varieties such as "dry paste" or "sour paste". 
  •  "sour paste", as the name suggests, tastes a little sour, but obviously characterized by a relatively thick and soft rice noodle
  •  "dry paste" does not have the sourness of the sour paste, and the noodle is relatively thin and more rigid. The older people in Kunming think the "sour paste" noodles is more authentic

Steamed-pot Chicken (Qiguoji)
It is unique for its steaming pot, which was invented by Yunnan residents. The chicken is boiled in the special steaming pot which has an opening in the center. Rare medicinal herbs native to Yunnan are added to the pot. The chicken is tender and the soup is delicious. Steamed-pot Chicken is also very nutritious and local residents claim that the soup has many medicinal qualities. 












Cloud Ham (Xuanwei Ham)
One of China's three most famous ham dishes. It is known for its fragrance, appearance, and fantastic taste. The ham is slightly salty and sweet, without an oily taste. It is one of visitor's to Yunnan Province's most popular dishes
